Hello all.
I have an ftp server and was wondering if someone could help me figure out my speed limit settings. I have 2 groups set up. One for family and friends, and one for just random people I add that I don't know. I'd like for my family and friends group to have an unlimited speed but for my random users group to have a lower speed. I have a 22/5 connection but a cap of 200 gb a month I believe. There are quite a number of random users on my ftp but most don't upload. While I don't mind that as much, I wouldn't want that group to hog my connection as I do use it quite a bit for other things other than running an ftp. I don't want to give my random users group a slow speed either because what is the point of having an ftp when it will take you forever to download something?
I am using filezilla for my ftp server. In filezilla, we can set a group speed for dl/ul and the choices are unlimited, constant speed, or create your own rule. In the filezilla settings itself, there is a speed limit setting which I'm assuming controls the speed for the whole server which I'm not going to worry about. But please correct me if I'm wrong.
So my question is, with my connection, what sort of speed should I set for my random user's group? Should I set a constant speed and if so, what should it be? The default speed for that setting is 10kb/sec but it seems very slow to me. Does it mean the whole group will download at 10kb/sec? What if I have 5 users on who belong to that group? Wouldn't they be getting only 2kb/sec? If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it. I want to share but I don't want to have my internet shut off on me either. Thanks so much for reading and I look forward to your replies. .
Cordially,
Michelle
Hey Michelle,
Good question. A constant speed of 10 KBPS as a group speed limit, distributed among 5 users, means everybody will be downloading at 10 KB/S, if I know FileZilla correctly. If you want to have a suitable DL/UL speed, I'd set my DL to something like 256 and my UL to 64, just so they're not getting speeds so fast that they would want to download things all the time but not so slow that they wouldn't want to use the FTP.

I meant to write to this a while back but got caught up with other things. First of all, thank you so much Tyler for all your help. If I had known you knew the answer to my question, I would have bugged you on WLM. hehehehe I did get my ftp speeds straightened out and even got testers to test it out for me. Thank you guys! You know who you are.
I called comcast and was told I have a 22/5 connection. Then I called back to double check and was told by another representative that I have a 22/15 connection. This is very interesting because there is a big difference. So yes. My friends and family can max out my connection; whatever it is and my random users group only has a max of 50K/sec on both ul/dl. If you're interested in getting an account, just email me at MYShowe_ftp@comcast.net. Thanks again for everyone's help.
All the best:
Michelle
